Riverwalk Academy’s third- and fourth-grade students were treated to an unforgettable literacy rally this week as the Charlotte Hornets’ Hugo Book Bus Tour rolled onto campus, bringing books, energy, and inspiration.
The Hugo Book Bus, the Charlotte Hornets’ signature community outreach program, promotes the importance of reading by delivering free books to students across the Carolinas. During the rally, Hornets’ mascot Hugo energized the crowd with music, games, and cheers, reminding students that reading can be just as exciting as a game-winning dunk.
Following the rally, Riverwalk Academy’s fourth-grade students had the special opportunity to step aboard the Hugo Book Bus, where they each selected a free book to take home, courtesy of the Charlotte Hornets. The experience allowed students to connect their excitement for sports with a love for reading and learning.
“Each time the Hugo Book Bus visits, the excitement and joy it brings to our students are just as special as ever,” said Erica McCray, Elementary Principal at Riverwalk Academy. “It’s a wonderful tradition that our students look forward to every year.”
Amanda Secor, Literacy Coach, added, “Our 3rd and 4th grade students enjoyed engaging with Hugo from the Charlotte Hornets this morning during a presentation on becoming a Reading Rockstar! It’s wonderful to see our students so energized about reading.”
The literacy rally also supports Riverwalk Academy’s broader mission to develop World-Class Skills and Life and Career Characteristics in all learners. By partnering with organizations like the Charlotte Hornets, the school continues to show students how enthusiasm, teamwork, and perseverance extend beyond the classroom.
